Smiths Outlook on Life in Sillitoes The Loneliness of the Long Distan
There are two basic facts in Smithââ¬â¢s life: one, that heââ¬â¢s in a war with the ââ¬Å"In-laws,â⬠and two, that heââ¬â¢s going to fight it until the day he dies, or die fighting. From Smithââ¬â¢s perspective, there is an impassable line between him and the In-laws, who are out to get him, and his best method of success is beating them down. In taking revenge on the governor of Borstal, Smith thinks he has succeeded. What Smith doesnââ¬â¢t realize is that he, not the governor, truly loses when he loses the race. Smith needs to revise his world view to realize that there is a better way of getting what he wants, and the revenge he seeks is only a sign of his weakness and unhappiness with his own life. By focusing his energy on getting revenge, Smith compromises his opportunities and ability to succeed. Ultimately, his actions are a loss for Smith more than for the people he is fighting. Smith sees the authority figures around him as a threat to his happiness. To Smith, the cops and the governor of Borstal block his success. This is such a strong reality for him that the idea of them being on his side is impossible: ââ¬Å"If only ââ¬Ëthemââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëusââ¬â¢ had the same ideas weââ¬â¢d get [along]â⬠¦but they donââ¬â¢t see eye to eye with us and we donââ¬â¢t see eye to eye with them, so thatââ¬â¢s how it stands and how it will always standâ⬠(7-8). The ââ¬Å"themâ⬠he refers to are people like the governor of Borstal and the cops, the ââ¬Å"In-law blokesâ⬠who, according to him, are ââ¬Å"all on the watch for Out-law blokes like [Smith]â⬠¦waiting to ââ¬Ëphone for the coppers as soon as [he makes] a false moveâ⬠(10). Furthermore, his strongest truth is that he is alone: ââ¬Å"I knew what the loneliness of the long-distance runner running across country felt like, realizing that as far as I was concerned this feeling was... ...ke Smith, they become ever more revengeful towards those who end up punishing them for not being something they have no real incentive to be. Ultimately, criminals such as Smith end up wasting societyââ¬â¢s resources (copsââ¬â¢ time and citizensââ¬â¢ money), wasting their own energy which could be better used to make them economically productive and contributing members of society, and making society less safe by reducing the mutual trust of societyââ¬â¢s members due to thefts. The society does not seem to have a good way of dealing with criminalsââ¬âSmith is not rectified in any manner by Borstal, and merely punished. Perhaps society needs to focus on increasing financial opportunities for the poor rather than trying to change values that are really an outcome of the society in which they grow up. The core problem is the society; once that is fixed, values will change automatically.

What Are The Basic Traits Of Liberal Feminism Essay
1. What are the basic traits of ââ¬Å"liberal feminismâ⬠? The basic traits of liberal feminism are most easily defined as ââ¬Å"just plainâ⬠feminism. Liberal feminists are the people involved in society who are attempting to ââ¬Å"level the playing field,â⬠ââ¬Å"break the glass ceiling,â⬠or ââ¬Å"make room for women at the table of power.â⬠Liberal feminism is present in the idea that gender does not, and should not play a role in a personââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"education, employment, [or] housing.â⬠Therefore, liberal feminism is based off of the ideals and philosophies that all humans are created equally, and deserve to be treated as so. People who partake in these ideals are partaking in the movement of feminism, more specifically, liberal feminism, often times without even realizing it. 2. How does Lorber explain that gender is a social construct? In her essay, ââ¬Å"The Social Construction of Genderâ⬠, Judith Lorber explains that in society we often ââ¬Å"assume gender is bred into our genesâ⬠(112), meaning that as a society we often times relate a personââ¬â¢s gender (behaviors, traits, and identity) with their sex (biological makeup), thus labeling a personââ¬â¢s gender as something grouped together with their genetic makeup. The reality of this is that gender is created, and ââ¬Å"doneâ⬠by every individual person. Lorber states that gender, ââ¬Å"like culture, is a human productionâ⬠(112), and ââ¬Å"doingâ⬠gender can appear as small as how a parent chooses to dress their child, resulting in how the child looks.
